If you were at the Redding Rodeo Grounds prior to nine o’clock on the morning of May 11, 2026, you would have seen a stream of of those bright yellow school buses, from several local school districts, bringing in dozens of special kids to participate in Special Kids Day and get a thrilling dose of what it’s like to be a Cowboy, atop a marvelous, tame and powerful horse, firmly secured by several Redding Rodeo Association and Asphalt Cowboys members.

According to Redding Rodeo Association President Ted Bambino, this year's Special Kids Day was a huge success, bringing joy and confidence to children with special needs. Said Bambino, “Special Kids Day is such a cherished tradition… and we’re proud to have done it for over 50 years, allowing special kids to enjoy horseback and wagon rides without the stress of competition.”

According to the Redding Rodeo Association publicity coordinator, Michelle M. Slade, the event saw enthusiastic participation from the community, with organizations like the Asphalt Cowboys, Exodus Farms, Chicks ‘n Chaps, Redding Jr. Rodeo Association, Redding Women’s Rodeo Association, and the Redding Rodeo Ladies Auxiliary Association contributing to the cause.

Local authorities, including Redding Police Chief Brian Barner and Shasta County Sheriff Mike Johnson, were front—and center—to support the event, highlighting its importance to the community. “These special kids had a blast riding horses, interacting with rodeo animals, and enjoying activities like petting zoos, wagon rides, and playground time,” remarked Erick Mattson, a member of the Redding Rodeo Association.
Some highlights of Special Kids Day included horseback rides and animal interactions. Kids got to ride horses, pet goats, and even try to hug a chicken. Kids enjoyed playground time, cherry-flavored Kona ice, and quality time with their families. Additionally, clowns and riders put on a show, entertaining the children and making the event even more special.
