Urgent: Shasta Lake Animal Shelter Beyond Capacity – Special Adoption Event Tomorrow (Saturday, June 6, 2026)

The City of Shasta Lake Animal Shelter is at a critical point. An influx of dumped dogs and puppies has pushed the facility beyond capacity, placing multiple animals at risk of euthanasia for space as early as Monday. Shelter staff suspect people are abandoning animals nearby, mistakenly believing the adoption event makes it a safe drop-off location. This irresponsible practice is endangering both the dumped animals and those already waiting for homes.
In response, all adoption fees are waived tomorrow thanks to sponsorship from the ASPCA and CalAnimals as part of #CaliforniaAdoptAPetDay. This is a last-chance opportunity for the community to save lives.
Dogs at Urgent Risk
These animals must find homes by Monday or face euthanasia due to severe overcrowding:
Peanut – Small adult female, urgent priority
Lucy – ~6 months old, female (often described with her brother Cooper)
Zeppelin, Joplin, and Jagger
Cooper – ~6 months old, highly social with a distinctive brown mask
Goose
Winnie – Recently off stray hold
That’s seven puppies and one adult in immediate need.
Heartbreaking Update on Peanut
Just two weeks ago, Peanut gave birth to 9 puppies. Tragically, none survived. Staff discovered she was suffering from eclampsia (dangerously low calcium preventing milk production). Despite emergency veterinary care, antibiotics, and round-the-clock syringe feeding by staff and the shelter manager, Chelsea, the puppies did not make it — a devastating loss for everyone involved.
Peanut was used strictly for breeding and has likely had multiple litters. She was never socialized and remains extremely fearful of people, often avoiding all contact. Shelter volunteer Cheri, who specializes in nervous and scared dogs, has been working patiently with her:

Peanut is small, improving daily, and ready for a calm, patient home that understands her past trauma. She deserves a true happily-ever-after.
Meet Lucy
Lucy, about 6 months old, is warming up more each day. She is noticeably more confident when with another dog — especially her brother Cooper. She does best in a home with at least one other dog and will require a very patient owner willing to give her time to fully come out of her shell.
Lucy came from a breeding household with little to no socialization. She is learning to trust human contact and is treat-motivated.
Cooper
Cooper (Lucy’s brother) is a playful, attention-loving ~6-month-old who gets along well with other dogs (meet-and-greet required). Like Lucy, he needs training and patience but is highly social with a happy-go-lucky personality.

These animals — especially the fearful or under-socialized ones — need committed adopters who understand puppy training, patience, and the extra time needed for trauma recovery.
