Urgent Search for Nancy Guthrie

Foul Play Suspected in Possible Kidnapping of 'Today' Anchor's Mother

Authorities in Pima County are intensifying their search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC "Today" show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, amid growing concerns of foul play and a possible kidnapping. Nancy was last seen at her home in the upscale Catalina Foothills neighborhood on the evening of January 31, and her disappearance has prompted a multi-agency investigation, including the FBI, as evidence points to forced entry and abduction.

Timeline of the Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie, described as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes, lived alone in her residence near East Skyline Drive and North Campbell Avenue. She was last spotted around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, after having dinner with her daughter Annie Guthrie. Family members grew concerned when she failed to attend church the following morning, leading them to report her missing around noon on February 1.

Upon arriving at the home, investigators declared it a crime scene, citing signs of forced entry, a small amount of blood near the front door, and a missing security camera. Essentials like her cellphone, wallet, car, and vital medications were left behind, ruling out the possibility that she left voluntarily. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated, "There’s nothing to indicate she left on her own. This is a race against time."

Evidence of Foul Play and Kidnapping Suspicions

Sheriff Nanos has emphasized that "concerning circumstances" suggest Nancy was taken against her will. Homicide detectives were initially involved, though the case is now primarily treated as a kidnapping. Lab results from DNA samples have not yet identified suspects, and while there are no indications of a targeted attack linked to Savannah Guthrie's celebrity status, authorities have not ruled out any motives.

A significant development emerged with reports of ransom notes. Celebrity news site TMZ and a local Arizona news station, KOLD (CBS affiliate), received notes demanding millions in Bitcoin. Sheriff Nanos confirmed awareness of these notes, which are under FBI review for authenticity, but details remain limited to avoid compromising the investigation. Nanos also noted that Nancy's pacemaker could potentially aid in locating her, though no breakthroughs have been reported.

Officials have explicitly dismissed any connections to cartels, border issues, or organized crime, stating, "There’s nothing to indicate cartel or border issues. Nothing like that."

Law Enforcement Efforts and Latest Developments

As of February 3, the search has entered its third day, with the Pima County Sheriff's Department leading the effort alongside the FBI. Hundreds of tips have poured in, and a $2,500 reward is offered for information leading to Nancy's safe return. During a press conference on February 3, Sheriff Nanos urged anyone holding Nancy to release her, warning that her lack of medication could prove fatal: "If she's alive right now, her meds are vital. I can't stress that enough. It's been better than 24 hours, and the family tells us if she doesn't have those meds, it can become fatal."

Investigators are analyzing home security footage, cell phone data, and neighborhood surveillance. The FBI has ramped up involvement, focusing on digital forensics and potential ransom communications. A tipline has been established at 520-351-4900, and the public is encouraged to provide any relevant information.

In a poignant update, the FBI pleaded, "Please help us bring Nancy Guthrie home," as the search stretches beyond 48 hours.

Family's Anguish and Public Support

Savannah Guthrie, 54, has stepped away from her professional duties, including coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, to focus on the family crisis. She shared a heartfelt plea on social media: "Please pray. Raise your prayers. Bring her home." The family is fully cooperating with authorities and has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.

Public figures, including President Trump, who mentioned plans to call Savannah personally, have voiced concern. Social media is flooded with prayers and well-wishes from colleagues like Maria Bartiromo, Glenn Beck, and Piers Morgan.

This remains an active investigation with no confirmed motive or suspects. Authorities stress that time is critical due to Nancy's medical needs, and they continue to appeal for public assistance. Anyone with information should contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department immediately at 520-351-4900.
