The single-issue campaign

We have two candidates for supervisor running single-issue campaigns—election

integrity. While this issue is honorable, is this the best use of time and energy, given that

the board appears to have spent about 2% of its time over the past 4 years on this

issue?

Are these candidates willing to spend 98% of their time working on the issues of the

larger government and managing an almost 7-million-dollar budget? There are over 20

distinct functional areas or departments in the county government with 95+ budget units

under them. There are programs to be decided on, the future to look to, as we can see

in the effort to build a jail for a particular inmate population.

I would take issue with the county’s decision to sue its own citizens and the very vocal

public disregard of the citizens’ inalienable (God-given) right to challenge government

abuses—in this case, California’s continuing encroachment on our right to fair and

transparent elections by passing law after law, nibbling away at our freedoms. But taking

on the county government by legally petitioning and putting a measure on the ballot to

right these wrongs—which have been done—in addition to having issues decided in

court—which is being done—is the logical way to deal with this issue.

As is said, it’s complicated, but we need to elect supervisors who see the whole picture

and are willing to commit their time and energies to the whole of the county.
