NYC’s Socialist Surge: Mamdani-Backed Candidates Sweep Democratic Primaries in Shocking Leftward Shift

In a dramatic display of the Democratic Party’s accelerating march toward democratic socialism, three candidates heavily backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani — himself a proud member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) — secured decisive victories in Tuesday’s New York congressional primaries. The results represent a “clean sweep” for the far-left wing of the party and a clear warning sign for those who value limited government, secure borders, and traditional American principles.
The winners — Claire Valdez in NY-7, Brad Lander in NY-10, and Darializa Avila Chevalier in NY-13 — now head into the November general election in heavily Democratic districts, making their victories all but assured. Here’s a closer look at who they are, what they stand for, and why their success should concern conservatives nationwide.
Claire Valdez (NY-7) – A DSA Firebrand from the Assembly
State Assemblymember Claire Valdez, a 36-year-old union organizer and explicit democratic socialist, won the open 7th District (northern Brooklyn and Queens) with roughly 56% of the vote. She defeated more moderate progressive Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
Background: Valdez worked low-wage jobs before becoming a program assistant at Columbia University, where she rose in the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 2110. A longtime NYC-DSA leader and dual citizen of the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Nation, she was elected to the Assembly in 2024 after defeating an incumbent.

Sponsor Medicare for All on Day One, funded by taxing billionaires and corporations.

Brad Lander (NY-10) – The “Pragmatic” Progressive Who Defeated an Incumbent
Former NYC Comptroller Brad Lander ousted incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman in the 10th District (Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan) with about 65% of the vote. The race became a proxy battle over Israel policy and progressive purity.
Background: A University of Chicago and Pratt Institute alum, Lander built a career in urban planning and affordable housing nonprofits before serving on the City Council (2010–2021) and as Comptroller (2022–2025). He ran for mayor in 2025, finished third, and cross-endorsed Mamdani. Though he left DSA after October 7, 2023, he remains a leading progressive voice.

In the biggest surprise of the night, 32-year-old community organizer and DSA-backed Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District (Upper Manhattan and the Bronx) with roughly 49–50% of the vote.
Background: Daughter of Dominican immigrants, Chevalier grew up in Florida, attended Columbia University, and is now a PhD student at CUNY. She has worked with immigrant rights groups (Families for Freedom), as a public defender investigator in Harlem, and helped organize the 2023–24 Columbia encampment. She converted to Islam and has been outspoken on Palestine.

Strong renter protections and public housing expansion.
Redirect military spending (“babies, not bombs”) and criticize Israel policy.

What This Means
These results are more than local New York stories — they signal the DSA and progressive left’s growing power inside the Democratic Party. Mayor Mamdani’s ability to deliver wins against incumbents and establishment favorites shows that anti-Israel sentiment, open-border rhetoric, and expansive government programs resonate with primary voters in deep-blue areas.
For Shasta County and rural America, the contrast couldn’t be starker. While New York City experiments with socialist policies on housing, policing, and immigration, our communities continue to value self-reliance, secure borders, fiscal responsibility, and traditional values. The nationalization of these far-left ideas through Congress could bring higher taxes, more regulation, and weakened enforcement to every corner of the country — including here in Northern California.
Bottom line: The Democratic Party is shifting further left at a rapid pace. Primary voters in New York just sent three candidates who openly embrace socialist policies to Congress. Conservatives nationwide — and especially here in Shasta County — should take note and stay engaged. Local elections matter, but so do the national trends shaping the future of our country.
