Having been inside—and around—Whistlestop Park in downtown Redding for a number of years, never was it so jam-packed with people, dogs, and kids as it was on Friday, July 3, 2026, when (and where) the Redding Hot Dog Eating Championship took place.

Billed as a fun-filled evening with laughs, excitement, and friendly competition, the Redding Hot Dog Eating Championship featured 10 male participants wolfing down as many hot dogs as they could—all in a span of five minutes. Organized by the Viva Downtown organization as part of its First Friday events program, participants gathered for a five-minute battle to determine who would be Redding’s “Top Dog.”

According to Viva Downtown executive, Blake Fisher, contestants had to be at least 18 years old, complete an application, and sign a liability waiver. “Part of the competition rules meant that contestants could dunk their hot dogs in a cup, filled with a liquid, but only for five seconds,” explained Fisher.
“The winner, a fellow named Abraham, consumed eight hot dogs in five minutes and, best of all, he didn’t throw up,” said Russ Wenham,” And thank you, Leadership Redding, for hosting this event, as it was fun to cheer on the contestants, plus the winner made it look easy—eating eight hot dogs in under five minutes. Of course, afterward, we went across the street into the Redding Public Market, where, you guessed it, we consumed hot dogs. Go figure!
