Redding, CA – February 17, 2026 – A powerful winter storm continued to batter Northern California today, prompting mandatory chain screenings on Interstate 5 and reports of hazardous conditions leading to vehicle collisions with snow plows.

According to Caltrans District 2, as of approximately 8:24 a.m. PST, all vehicles traveling northbound on Interstate 5 (I-5) are being screened for chains at Pollard Flat in Shasta County due to active winter weather. Vehicles without chains are not permitted to proceed. Chain requirements vary along the route northward, with all vehicles required to carry chains. Additional screening points have been reported near Fawndale Road over-crossing (about 10 miles north of Redding), where drivers must have chains in possession to continue.

Caltrans advises motorists to check real-time conditions via QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) or by calling 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).

Caltrans stated, "...if travel isn't essential, stay home and stay safe. Our crews are out there working around the clock to keep routes open and as safe as possible. Every safe decision you make helps protect the people working out there in the storm."

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Redding Area reported two separate crashes this morning on State Route 44 (SR-44), where vehicles collided with Caltrans snow plows. No specific injury details were immediately available, but the incidents underscore the dangers of winter driving in low-visibility and slick conditions.

CHP urged drivers to exercise extreme caution: slow down significantly, maintain extra following distance, and heed all roadway advisory signs. "Winter driving on roads and highways in snowy weather can be a pleasant adventure—or it can be frustrating, tiring, and even hazardous," the agency stated. If travel is not essential, officials strongly recommend staying off the roads.

General winter driving safety reminders include:

- Ensure tires are properly inflated and have adequate tread.

- Carry chains, an emergency kit with water, blankets, extra clothing, food, and a flashlight.

- Allow plenty of extra travel time.

Conditions remain dynamic due to the ongoing storm, with chain controls also reported on other regional highways like portions of SR-89 and SR-44. Motorists are encouraged to #KnowBeforeYouGo and monitor updates closely, as requirements can change rapidly.
