In a heartwarming triumph of compassion, justice, and unwavering advocacy, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has announced the commutation of Tina Peters’ nearly nine-year prison sentence. Following persistent urging from President Donald Trump, Polis confirmed today that Peters will be released on parole on June 1, 2026 — bringing an end to a saga that has captured the hearts of millions who view her as a symbol of courage and integrity. Tina Peters' release does not erase her conviction. Governor Polis has merely commuted her sentence, and she will be released on probation.

Tina Peters, the former Mesa County Clerk and Recorder, stepped into the national spotlight as a devoted public servant who dared to question and investigate concerns about election security in the wake of the 2020 presidential election. Her actions stemmed from a deep sense of duty to ensure every vote counts and to protect the sacred trust of American democracy. Far from seeking personal gain, Peters acted as a patriot driven by love for her country — a steadfast belief that transparency and accountability must prevail.

Her story resonates even more deeply because Tina Peters is a proud Gold Star Mother. In 2017, she suffered the unimaginable loss of her son, Special Operator 1st Class Remington “Remi” Peters, a decorated U.S. Navy SEAL and combat veteran. Remi tragically died at age 27 in a parachute accident during a public demonstration for New York Fleet Week. His heroic service and sacrifice for the nation left Tina with both profound grief and an even fiercer commitment to defending American values. As a Gold Star Mother, she has carried that banner with grace, turning personal pain into public purpose.

Adding to her remarkable resilience, Tina has also battled cancer. In 2016, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent life-changing surgery to remove half of one lung. Despite the physical challenges and ongoing health concerns, she continued serving her community with determination and optimism — a true testament to the unbreakable American spirit.

President Trump has been a vocal champion for Peters from the beginning, repeatedly highlighting what many see as an overly harsh sentence for a first-time, non-violent offender. At Trump’s urging, the pressure mounted, and today’s commutation stands as a powerful response. Trump expressed his happiness and relief in characteristic fashion on social media right after the announcement:

His straightforward, jubilant call captured the sentiment of countless supporters who have long viewed Peters’ case as one of selective prosecution and political targeting. Trump’s steadfast support amplified the voices calling for mercy and fairness, ultimately helping pave the way for this hopeful outcome.

As June 1 approaches, friends, family, and patriots across the nation are preparing a hero’s welcome. Tina Peters will soon step out of La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo and back into the arms of loved ones — free to continue her fight, cherish her family, and focus on her health. This moment is more than a legal decision; it is a celebration of second chances, the power of advocacy, and the enduring strength of a Gold Star Mother who never stopped believing in America.

Tina’s journey reminds us all that true patriots come in many forms — sometimes in the quiet determination of a county clerk, the unbreakable love of a grieving mother, and the courageous fight of a cancer survivor. Welcome home, Tina Peters. Your country is better because you stood tall, and brighter days lie ahead.

God bless you, Tina — and God bless the United States of America.
