Yreka Theater Reopens After Six Years; Weed Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation; Fire Academy Honored


YREKA, Calif. — Siskiyou County residents are navigating a week of community milestones, public safety incidents, and regional recognition as spring activities ramp up across the North State.


Spotlight on Yreka

The historic Yreka Community Theater has officially reopened after more than six years of closure. The venue celebrated its return on March 14–15, 2026, with a sold-out James Garner Johnny Cash Tribute concert that drew a full house of 304 attendees. Local leaders and residents hailed the reopening as a major cultural win for downtown Yreka, with additional shows now on the schedule.

Tragedy struck in the early morning hours of March 13, 2026, when an 18-year-old man from Etna was killed in a single-vehicle crash. The driver’s car struck a tree on Oberlin Road east of Phillipe Lane shortly after 3:30 a.m. A passenger was hospitalized.


County officials continue to seek applicants for the Behavioral Health Advisory Board (Mental Health Board). Applications are open to residents interested in shaping local mental health policy and services; the board meets in Yreka.


Construction work at the County Government Center in Yreka is ongoing for drainpipe repairs, with minor traffic and parking impacts expected in the immediate area.


Spotlight on Weed

Law enforcement is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 21, 2026, near Interstate 5 Exit 748 in Weed. A Weed Police Department officer initiated a traffic stop for vehicle-code violations. During the stop, with assistance from the Mt. Shasta Police Department, officers located suspected methamphetamine. The driver allegedly produced a firearm, leading officers to fire, fatally wounding him. The California Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team is leading the probe.


The community continues to support families affected by the sudden December 2025 closure of the Roseburg Forest Products veneer mill in Weed, with local relief funds still active.

  • Fire Academy Excellence: The College of the Siskiyous Fire Academy (based in Weed) received the prestigious 2026 Ronny J. Coleman Award for Academy of Excellence from State Fire Training. The award was presented on March 18 at the Fresno Training Chiefs Symposium, recognizing the program’s innovation and leadership in firefighter education.

Civic Engagement: A “No Kings Day” protest is scheduled for March 28 in Yreka. The Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council meets on March 30.


Disaster Recovery: Low-interest SBA (Small Business Administration) loans are still available for individuals and businesses impacted by the December 2025 storms.
