Shasta Unfiltered has reviewed video evidence showing Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang repeatedly turning her back on the American flag and refusing to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance during public meetings. The footage, which has gone viral, highlights Vang — a Democratic candidate for California’s 7th Congressional District — standing apart from colleagues with her head down while others face the flag.

Who is Mai Vang? Mai Vang is a Sacramento native, daughter of Hmong refugees, and the eldest of 16 children. She has served on the Sacramento City Council (District 8) since 2020 and is now challenging Rep. Doris Matsui in the June 2, 2026, primary for CA-7.

Her family found refuge in America — the same nation whose flag she turns away from during the pledge. Vang has defended the action, citing a moment to “ground” herself amid perceived injustices, with hashtags including #FreePalestine.

Council Chamber Context

Strong Backlash: Veterans groups, Democrats, and commentators have condemned the behavior as disrespectful. The New York Post stated those who “disdain America” have “no business trying to lead it.”

Why This Matters to Shasta County: Even though CA-7 is in the Sacramento area, state politics affect us all. Early voting is underway — voters deserve full transparency about candidates seeking higher office.

Mai Vang is entitled to her views. But turning away from the American flag sends a clear message. Voters will decide if this represents the leadership they want in Congress.

Shasta Unfiltered will keep covering this race. Video doesn't lie — and the optics speak volumes.
