AUGUSTA, Ga. — April 12, 2026 — The weather at Augusta National Golf Club was postcard-perfect all week for the 2026 Masters Tournament: bright sunny skies, mild temperatures in the 70s, light winds, and not a drop of rain. Yet despite those ideal scoring conditions, the legendary course — with its lightning-fast greens, treacherous bunkers, and strategic demands — proved as punishing as ever, separating the field and setting the stage for one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory.

In the end, defending champion Rory McIlroy stood tallest once again. The Northern Irishman carded a steady final-round 71 to win his second consecutive Green Jacket by a single stroke over world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy joined an ultra-elite group — Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods — as one of only a handful of players to successfully defend the Masters title in back-to-back fashion.
“This one means everything,” McIlroy said during the Green Jacket ceremony, his voice cracking with emotion. “To defend this title and win back-to-back at Augusta… It’s incredibly special. I know how hard it is to do what Jack, Nick, and Tiger did. I’m just so grateful.”
McIlroy had built a commanding lead after a sizzling second round, but a third-round 73 tightened the race heading into Sunday. Scheffler, meanwhile, had endured a poor Friday round that left him well back in the pack.
“I was so far behind after Friday that just being in the hunt on Sunday felt like a win,” Scheffler said afterward. “Saturday was one of those magical days where everything clicked. I gave myself a chance, and that’s all you can ask for at this golf course.”

On Sunday, Scheffler kept the pressure on with birdie opportunities and clutch shots, refusing to go away. But a missed putt on the 71st hole (the 17th) ultimately proved decisive.
“That’s golf,” Scheffler said with a sportsmanlike smile. “I had my opportunity on 17, and it just didn’t go in. Rory played fantastic under pressure. He’s a deserving champion and a great friend.” Schefler would go on to a runner-up finish, only one stroke behind McIlroy.

Other notable performances included Justin Rose, the 2025 runner-up to Rory McIlroy. Rose would find himself in the lead by 2 shots mid-way through his round, but he would falter down the stretch. Similarly, Cameron Young, winner of the 2026 Players Championship, would find himself holding the lead at one point but losing it late in the round, despite carding even par on Augusta's difficult back-nine. Both would tie for third place.
McIlroy, showing the composure of a two-time Masters champion, navigated the back nine with precision and poise, coming to the 72nd hole with a two-stroke lead. However, his tee shot on 18 leaked far to the right, leaving him a difficult shot to the green. He had to hook the shot some 30+ yards to his left to have a chance of saving par. It ultimately found its way into a greenside bunker. As he walked up the 18th fairway to a thunderous ovation, the weight of history was evident. To secure the victory, McIlroy had to navigate his way out of the treacherous greenside bunker and avoid making worse than bogey. After tapping in for bogie, he reflected: “Coming down the stretch, I was thinking about all the great players who have done this before. Augusta National still finds a way to test you even when the weather is perfect. I’m proud of how I stayed patient today.”
Moments later, he slipped on the Green Jacket for the second year in a row.
