Redding City Council Meeting Highlights: Preparations for the Ironman Event

REDDING, Calif. — The Redding City Council held a relatively short regular meeting on August 4, 2026, with most items advancing quickly through the consent calendar.
Key actions included approval of several infrastructure projects, among them the Tarmac Road storm drain repair update, the purchase of a new hydro-cleaner vehicle for the Wastewater Collection Division, and the acceptance of $2.4 million from a class-action settlement related to PFAS contamination in water supplies. The funds will be received over several years through 2033.
Council members also unanimously approved city funding and support for the upcoming Ironman 70.3 Northern California event. Upfront costs to the City for added police presence and other costs total $50,550. The Redding Electric Utility will sponsor the event with a $15,000 donation, and Solid Waste will donate 5 drop boxes, bringing the cost down for the City to $35,550. This will be offset by an anticipated $160K in TOT and sales tax revenue increases for Redding.
Tim Bauer of the Redding Sports Commission is coordinating the event and spoke about preparations, noting the triathlon is expected to draw thousands of athletes and visitors to the area. There are 1600 participants, representing 48 states and 20 countries, competing for the $40K in prize money. Preparations are starting next week with banners going up on the Redding Civic Center grounds. Event agendas can be found at ReddingSportsCo.com or at the Redding Chamber. Mailers will be sent to all businesses and residents impacted by the race course, with a maximum of 4 hours of on-course road closures. 6,000 to 7,000 people are expected to attend the event the weekend of August 14-16. Weather forecasts as of now predict favorable highs in the mid-90s, and Bauer anticipates that the race will be over before temperatures reach the day's high.

The City is looking for a new manager for the Civic Auditorium, and the RFP has been out for a week and can be found on the City's Purchasing Department's web page.
A closed session earlier in the evening focused on the performance evaluation of Interim City Manager Michael Webb, who was appointed following the sudden death of City Manager William Tarbox in July.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, starting at 6 p.m.
