New China restaurant located at 3669 Eureka Way in Redding, California, is a cozy, family-run restaurant that specializes in Chinese cuisine. They also operate a second restaurant named New China 2 located at 2990 Churn Creek Rd, also in Redding, California.
This particular review focuses on their Eureka Way location, although both locations share the same menu. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM, except on Sundays when they open at 12:00 PM. On any given day, you may find co-owner, Mei Chen, there. If she isn't cooking that day, she is keeping the restaurant operating smoothly.
Thank you Trip Advisor diners
The restaurant features an extensive menu with everything from a few dim sum (Chinese dumplings and appetizers) offerings to the commonly found Chinese entrees. This restaurant always seems to be busy, doing a brisk business with dine-in at nicely appointed tables, take-out, and delivery. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive, although they can get stretched thin at times when it is crowded. This reviewer advises: be patient; it's worth the wait, and they will take care of you.
On this evening, our group sampled several dishes:
Hot and sour soup
Pork pot stickers
Crispy egg rolls
Chicken with mixed vegetables
Beef with black bean sauce
House special Mei Fun noodles with chicken, beef, pork, and mixed vegetables
Steamed rice
Food Review:
Flavor, Quality, and Freshness: The food was delivered quickly and piping hot. Each dish certainly appeared to be freshly prepared. The flavors were all excellent. Some diners found their pot stickers to be a bit "doughy" with a slightly thicker pastry shell than others we've had. They were still very tasty. The egg rolls were crispy. Even some of the kids dining with us this evening found them to be delicious. Getting kids to eat something that has a lot of finely chopped vegetables and meat mixed in it is sometimes challenging—not with these egg rolls. The entrees were all very tasty as well; the vegetables were fresh and when cooked, they were not overcooked. They still had just the right amount of "crunch" to them. The star entree of the night was the beef with black bean sauce (sorry, not pictured). The beef was very tender and had a "velvety" texture; it was served, in our case, with onions and sliced zucchini (also available with bell pepper). The flavors in this dish were fantastic. The house special, mei fun noodles, were also a stand-out. Mei fun is a rice flour-based noodle, making it an excellent choice for diners with a gluten intolerance. The noodles were perfectly cooked and there was an excellent ratio of noodles to other items (proteins and vegetables). The flavor was excellent.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
Portion Size: On this evening, we were a party of four adults and two children (5 & 8). We found the portion sizes to be generous. No one went home hungry, and there were even leftovers to bring home.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Presentation: Presentation was acceptable, especially for the very busy evening. Not haute cuisine, but not splashed on the plate. Very typical for this type of restaurant.
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Service: The service was good. As mentioned, it was a very busy night with almost every table full. We may not have seen the same server each and every time, but our glasses never went empty, and our needs were satisfactorily attended to.
Rating: 4 out of 5
Value: The food here is very reasonably priced. The dinner described above for a party of six (4 adults and 2 kids) came to $72 (excluding drinks and tip). In light of the quality of the food and the attentive service we found a 20% tip to be reasonable:
