COTTONWOOD, Calif. — A 68-year-old Cottonwood man has been arrested and charged with murder after authorities say he shot and killed his 71-year-old sister and set a neighboring structure on fire on Thursday evening.
According to a press release from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 3300 block of Shane Lane around 5:46 p.m. on July 3, 2026, following reports of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they located a deceased adult female inside the residence who had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. The death was determined to be a homicide.
The victim was later positively identified as Georgia Darlene Barker, 71, of Cottonwood. Her brother, George Charles Barker, 68, also of Cottonwood, was named as the suspect.
Investigators reported that George Barker allegedly set fire to a neighboring inhabited structure, which was actively burning when deputies arrived. CalFire units responded and successfully extinguished the blaze.
Barker fled the scene after the incident. He was later located and detained in nearby Tehama County on Cypress Drive in Cottonwood following a separate hit-and-run incident.
Detectives from the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit (MCU), along with evidence technicians, obtained a search warrant and processed the residence, collecting evidence. The Shasta County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene, and next of kin were notified.
During the investigation, authorities determined that George Barker was on active felony probation out of Shasta County for violations, including criminal threats (422(a) PC) and resisting an executive officer (69(a) PC).
Barker was transported to the Major Crimes Unit for questioning and subsequently booked into the Shasta County Jail. Bail was set at $1,025,000 on the following charges:
187 PC — Murder
452(b) PC — Causing a Fire of an Inhabited Structure
29800(a)(1) PC — Felon in Possession of a Firearm
14601.1(a) VC — Driving on a Suspended License
23152(a) VC — DUI
23152(b) VC — DUI with a BAC of .08 or Greater
1203.2 PC — Violation of Probation
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Anderson Police Department, CalFire, the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol (including ground and air units) for their assistance.
The motive for the killing is not known at this time and the investigation remains active. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
This case is still under investigation, and Barker is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
