Shasta County continues to stand at the forefront of efforts to restore local control over elections and strengthen election integrity in California. On June 2, 2026, voters in the county overwhelmingly approved Measure B, a charter amendment designed to implement common-sense reforms, including voter ID requirements, hand counting of ballots, single-day in-person voting, and other measures aimed at enhancing security and transparency. The measure passed with more than 55% of the vote, reflecting a clear expression of the will of the people.
Despite this strong mandate, Measure B now faces a significant legal challenge from California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber. The state officials have filed suit seeking to invalidate the voter-approved measure before the August 24 deadline, assembling a team of attorneys to do so. This comes after Measure B had already survived two prior court challenges before appearing on the ballot. The election results have not yet been certified (expected around July 3), adding urgency to the situation.
In a notable development, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted 4-0 against defending Measure B and the expressed will of county voters in court. As a result, private citizens and supporters, represented by election law expert Alexander Haberbush, Esq. of the Lex Rex Institute, have stepped forward to mount a defense. A recent ruling by the California Court of Appeal denied the Attorney General’s attempt to fast-track the invalidation of Measure B, marking the third time opponents have failed to derail the measure through the courts.

Contributions can also be made directly via VoteForB.com (select the Donate option), or auction items and monetary donations can be dropped off at Jones’ Fort, 1600 E Cypress Ave., Redding. Businesses donating will receive recognition at the event.
A statement from supporters highlights the principle at stake: “If you believe the people — not Sacramento bureaucrats — should control our elections, please consider supporting this effort today!”
Ongoing Legal Context
According to a June 25, 2026, press release from the Lex Rex Institute, the Court of Appeal’s decision reinforces that disputes over the measure should be handled first in the appropriate trial court. Attorney Alexander Haberbush noted that this is the third failed attempt by opponents to block the will of Shasta County voters.

As the legal battle continues, Shasta County residents and election integrity advocates nationwide are watching closely to see whether the expressed will of the voters will be upheld.
