FAA Grounds American Airlines Nationwide Over Brief IT Outage; Flights Resume After Under an Hour

American Airlines flights across the United States were temporarily grounded Tuesday evening after a systemwide technology outage disrupted critical operations, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a nationwide ground stop. The disruption lasted less than an hour, but it cascaded into hundreds of delays and cancellations, complicating travel already strained by East Coast thunderstorms.

The FAA’s Air Traffic Control System Command Center imposed the ground stop at approximately 6:30 p.m. ET for all American Airlines mainline and regional flights still on the ground. Aircraft already airborne continued to their destinations without interruption. The stop was lifted at 7:18 p.m. ET, and the airline reported that systems were coming back online, with departures resuming shortly afterward. Residual restrictions lingered briefly at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), one of American’s largest hubs, due to congestion before fully clearing.


American Airlines described the problem in a statement: “A technology issue briefly impacted connectivity for some of our systems on Tuesday evening. Connectivity has been fully restored. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. We appreciate the efforts of our team to bring our systems back online so quickly and take care of our customers.”


The outage affected multiple systems, including passenger check-in and boarding, mobile app and website access, baggage handling, flight planning (preventing aircraft from obtaining necessary data or pushing back from gates), and electronic maintenance sign-offs. Customer service phone lines were also overwhelmed or unresponsive during the peak. DownDetector recorded 1,500–2,000 user reports of problems, concentrated in major cities including Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.


Flight-tracking data showed a significant operational impact. FlightAware reported approximately 1,100 delayed flights (about 30% of American’s schedule that day) and 221 cancellations (roughly 6%). Flightradar24 noted about 130 fewer American flights in the air at 7 p.m. ET compared with the same time the previous week. The timing proved particularly disruptive on the East Coast, where severe thunderstorms had already created narrow takeoff windows; many flights missed those windows, leading to longer delays, missed connections, and some passengers being deplaned.

Impacts on Travelers

Passengers faced immediate headaches: boarding passes that would not load in the app, agents unable to process check-ins or rebookings, and gate systems offline. Those already at the airport sat at gates while teams worked to restore connectivity. Even after flights resumed, the network faced hours of recovery as aircraft and crews were repositioned. Charlotte saw average ground delays for arriving flights climb significantly. Travelers connecting through major hubs or heading to or from the Northeast experienced the heaviest knock-on effects.


American urged customers to check flight status before heading to the airport. Residual delays were expected into the evening as the carrier worked through the backlog.

Risk of Spillover to Other Carriers

There is no indication this outage spilled over to other major U.S. carriers. United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines reported no comparable system problems. Industry observers noted that the disruption appeared isolated to American’s internal systems rather than a shared platform (such as Sabre) that multiple airlines rely on. No other carriers requested ground stops or reported widespread connectivity failures.


This stands in contrast to broader industry events in recent years that have hit multiple airlines simultaneously. While any major carrier outage creates secondary congestion at shared airports and can indirectly slow the overall system, the risk of a direct technical spillover in this case remains low based on available reporting.


Context and Recovery

American Airlines has experienced similar technology disruptions in the past, including a 2018 nationwide ground stop and earlier localized issues. Tuesday’s event was comparatively short-lived. By late evening, the airline stated connectivity had been fully restored. Operations continued to recover amid overlapping weather challenges.


For North State travelers who rely on American for connections through Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, or Charlotte, the disruption underscores the fragility of airline IT systems even when the core problem is contained to one carrier. Passengers with affected itineraries should monitor their flight status closely and contact the airline for rebooking options where necessary.
