Desperate and Shameful: Kathy Hochul Begs Wealthy New Yorkers to Return from Florida

“This Is What Happens When Socialists Begin to Run Out of Other People’s Money”

Analysis | March 20, 2026

In a jaw-dropping display of big-government panic, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has sunk to openly begging the wealthy residents she once drove out of the state to please come back from Florida. Not because she suddenly cares about their success or the American Dream — but because she desperately needs their tax dollars to keep funding New York’s unsustainable “generous social programs.”

This is exactly what happens when socialists finally begin to run out of other people’s money.

Speaking at Politico’s New York Agenda Summit in Albany on March 11, 2026, Hochul laid it all out during a fireside chat. Facing an eroding tax base as high-net-worth New Yorkers flee to no-income-tax states like Florida, she admitted the obvious and proposed her pathetic solution:

“I need people who are high net worth to support the generous social programs that we want to have in our state… Maybe the first step should be go down to Palm Beach and see who we can bring back home because our tax base has been eroded.”

She even half-joked about “patriotic millionaires” stepping up: “Okay, cut me the checks!”

The rank hypocrisy makes it even more revolting. Just four years ago, in 2022, the same Kathy Hochul told Republicans and conservatives who didn’t toe her progressive line: “Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida, where you belong. OK? Get out of town. You are not New Yorkers.”

Now that hundreds of thousands have taken her advice — fleeing crushing taxes, crime, regulations, and failing services — she’s sending out a search party to Palm Beach. The mask is completely off. New York’s model only “works” when productive citizens stay trapped and keep writing the checks.

Look at the luxury waterfront mansions in Palm Beach — the very places Hochul now wants to raid for recruits. These are the homes of the people she demonized, then lost, then begged to return. Florida’s gain is New York’s self-inflicted wound.

The data proves the exodus is real and devastating:

New York continues to lose population at an alarming rate while Florida gains. High earners save up to $195,000 a year simply by moving to Miami — money Hochul’s regime can no longer confiscate.

Instead of cutting spending, lowering taxes, or fixing the policies driving businesses and families away, Hochul’s answer is a desperate recruitment drive. Classic socialism: punish success until the golden geese fly south, then panic when the tax revenue dries up. Soon, California may be singing this same song as tax revenue dries up.

Margaret Thatcher was right. The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money. Kathy Hochul is living proof — and New Yorkers who still have the means should take this shameful episode as their cue to join the exodus before it’s too late. Florida is waiting.
