On January 5th, Carl DeMaio, a Republican California Assemblymember (District 75) announced his Voter ID Initiative hit 1 million signatures. DeMaio is also Chairman of Reform California, a conservative grassroots political organization and political action committee (PAC) based in San Diego, dedicated to government reform, taxpayer protection, and opposing what it describes as excessive taxes, regulations, corruption, and "far-Left" policies in the state. The proposed constitutional amendment requires voter ID for all California elections, verifies citizenship, and improves voter roll accuracy. Proponents, including DeMaio, state Senator Tony Strickland, and Donald J. DiCostanzo, lead it through Reform California. DeMaio is targeting 1.2 Million by March 15th to ensure 873,000 verified signatures.

Key Provisions The initiative amends the California Constitution to:
Require in-person voters to present government-issued photo ID.
Require vote-by-mail voters to provide the last four digits of a government-issued ID number.
Mandate election officials to verify U.S. citizenship for all registered voters and new registrants.
Require the Secretary of State and county officials to maintain accurate voter lists by regularly removing ineligible voters (e.g., non-citizens, deceased, or those who moved).
These changes aim to enhance election integrity and public confidence, as proponents argue current safeguards are insufficient. U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, says that California currently allows anyone to register to vote on the State’s voter registration website, even if they have no documentation. Also, it is currently illegal under State law to show your ID when voting in person.
