Washington, D.C. — The Trump White House is preparing for the holiday season, with First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald J. Trump inviting Americans to participate in the annual tradition of decorating the People’s House and performing during Christmas open houses.

Applications are now being accepted for two volunteer roles: Christmas decorators and holiday performers. The initiative continues a long-standing custom of welcoming volunteers from across the country to help create a festive atmosphere at the White House.

Volunteer Opportunities and Requirements

Interested individuals can apply for one of two distinct roles:

  • Christmas Decorators: Volunteers will assist with decorating the White House during the week of Monday, November 23 through Sunday, November 29, 2026. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens, and submit individual applications—group submissions are not accepted.

  • Holiday Performers: Musical groups, school bands, choirs, and holiday-themed entertainers are encouraged to apply to perform during the December holiday open houses. Performers must be available for assigned shifts in Washington, D.C.

All applicants must be United States citizens. Selected volunteers will be notified by Friday, October 2, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET. The application deadline for both categories is Friday, August 28, 2026, at 5:00 PM ET.

Application Process and Expectations

Applications are available online through dedicated portals for decorators and performers. Detailed information, including specific requirements, is provided on the respective application pages. Questions can be directed to Volunteers@who.eop.gov.

Volunteers are responsible for their own travel, accommodations, and personal expenses, though snacks are provided during service. Those conditionally selected must undergo a background investigation and additional security measures as part of the vetting process. Final participation is contingent upon successful clearance.

The White House notes that it receives a high volume of applications and cannot accommodate every interested applicant.

This year’s volunteer call emphasizes broad participation, welcoming Americans from every state and territory to contribute their time and talents to the nation’s most prominent holiday celebration. The Trumps have highlighted the importance of maintaining this cherished tradition at the White House.
