Violence Mars Third 'No Kings' Rally

Organizers Claim Record Turnout Amid Skepticism Over Crowd Sizes and Interfaith Messaging

March 29, 2026 — Organizers of the third round of nationwide "No Kings" protests on March 28 hailed the events as potentially the largest single-day demonstration in U.S. history, estimating 8 to 9 million participants across more than 3,300 events. The day featured unified messaging on rejecting authoritarianism, but it was marred by scattered violence in several cities, where clashes with law enforcement and counter-protesters erupted hours after the main rallies. Independent assessments and visual evidence continue to cast doubt on the inflated attendance figures.

While most gatherings remained peaceful—with speeches, music, and marches—the incidents underscored deepening divisions over the Trump administration’s policies on mass deportations, the U.S.-Iran war, and economic pressures.

Clashes Turn Violent in Key Cities

Violence broke out primarily after organized events concluded. In Los Angeles, hundreds of protesters approached a federal detention center, kicking fences and hurling cement blocks, rocks, and bottles at DHS agents and LAPD officers. Tear gas was deployed, and dozens were arrested.

In Portland, Oregon, masked individuals attacked officers outside an ICE facility with projectiles, leading to arrests.

Dallas, Texas, saw fights between demonstrators and counter-protesters, including Proud Boys members. Minor scuffles occurred elsewhere, with no reported fatalities.

Organizers blamed “agitators,” while critics highlighted the unrest as evidence of extremism.

Attendance Claims Face Scrutiny

The No Kings coalition (Indivisible, MoveOn, and allies) reported growth from ~5 million in June 2025 and ~7 million in October 2025. Flagship events like St. Paul claimed 200,000+. However, these self-reported figures appear inflated. Aerial footage, police estimates, and photos show large but not record-breaking crowds—e.g., St. Paul closer to 100,000 per state officials. Past rounds saw similar 10–30% overstatements.

Key Talking Points at the Rallies

Speakers and signs focused on four core themes:

  • “No Kings” and Anti-Authoritarianism: Trump was called a “wannabe king” or “tyrant.”

  • Opposition to ICE and Mass Deportations: Condemnation of “cruel” raids, with Bruce Springsteen in St. Paul debuting an anti-ICE song and honoring victims of recent clashes.

  • End the U.S.-Iran War: Protests linked the conflict to inflation and “senseless” deaths.

  • Economic Hardship and “Billionaire Rule”: Criticism of policies favoring elites amid rising costs.

A prominent interfaith angle—promoted by groups like the Interfaith Alliance—featured pre-rally gatherings and signs bearing the slogans “Faith Demands Freedom,” “We Worship Justice, Not Power,” and “No Kings, No Theocracy.” Organizers explicitly said, “NO to Christian nationalism.” Critics argue this messaging is anti-Christian, targeting traditional evangelical and conservative Christian beliefs.

The rallies reflected sharp national polarization, with organizers vowing continued action. Arrest updates and final crowd analyses are expected in the coming days.
