Tau Robotics Launches $30/Hour Humanoid Cleaning in San Francisco

Tau Robotics has launched an invite-only humanoid cleaning service in San Francisco at $30 per hour, positioning real-home deployments as both a practical service and a data engine for advancing general-purpose robot AI.

Founded in 2024 by Alexander Koch (CEO) and Cornelia Weinzierl, the compact San Francisco-based company is building toward general AI for robots. It has raised roughly $2.6–3 million in pre-seed funding and operates with a small team of engineers who emphasize real ownership and 100% in-person work. The robots (built on Unitree hardware with custom components) are jointly controlled by remote human operators from Tau’s SF facility and AI systems. Staff transports each unit to the customer’s home for tasks such as vacuuming, wiping surfaces, taking out trash, and clearing clutter. Customers must remain present, and continuous camera recording supports both operation and AI training toward future autonomy. Featured “cleaners” include specialized personas like Chelsea (kitchens/bathrooms), Elon (recurring visits that learn item placement), and Tony (deep cleans).


Access remains invite-only with a public waitlist at tau-robotics.com as the team scales carefully—initially just a few cleanings per week.


The Growing Field of Competitors

Tau is not operating in isolation. A small but intensifying group of companies is testing similar ideas of putting humanoids into real homes for chores, using a mix of teleoperation, hybrid AI control, and data collection.


The closest peer is Gatsby, another San Francisco startup. In May 2026, it claimed the first paid U.S. residential humanoid cleaning for a consumer, offering an on-demand app-based service at a flat $150 per clean (regardless of apartment size). Gatsby is robot-agnostic—it partners with hardware makers rather than building its own—and uses a combination of autonomy for routine tasks and human teleoperation for complex ones. No human cleaner enters the home. Like Tau, it is currently limited to San Francisco, with a waitlist for the Bay Area and other cities.

1X Technologies is taking a different path with its Neo humanoid, designed specifically for home chores (tidying, folding laundry, loading dishwashers, wiping surfaces, and more). Customers can pre-order for roughly $20,000 (ownership with priority delivery) or $499 per month (subscription). Production is underway at a new factory in Hayward, California, with first U.S. consumer shipments planned for 2026. Early units still often rely on remote human supervision for harder tasks while the robot learns. This is an ownership model rather than an on-demand service.


Other notable efforts include:

  • X Square Robot (China) running pilots in Shenzhen that pair humanoid robots with human cleaners in homes—robots handle structured tasks autonomously while people manage more complex work.

  • GigaAI’s SeeLight S1 (China), a wheeled home-focused robot aimed at broader chores, with pilot deployments planned.

  • Figure AI, which has released impressive autonomous demos of living-room and bedroom tidying and multi-robot collaboration, and has discussed home-assistant leasing, though it has not yet launched a public consumer cleaning service.


Related plays, such as companies offering free human cleaning in exchange for training data, further highlight how valuable real-home footage has become for training physical AI.

These approaches share a common theme: homes are the ultimate test environment for general-purpose robots, and the companies collecting real-world data today are positioning themselves for greater autonomy tomorrow—mirroring the path taken by autonomous vehicles.


What This Means for California’s North State

For residents of the North State (Redding, Chico, and surrounding areas), the practical reality in August 2026 is straightforward: none of these humanoid cleaning services are available yet.


Both Tau and Gatsby remain strictly San Francisco-focused. Tau has a neighborhood-based waitlist and has spoken of plans to expand, while Gatsby maintains a broader waitlist for other cities, but neither has announced timelines or operations north of the Bay Area.


Ownership options such as 1X Neo could eventually reach the region once broader U.S. deliveries begin later in 2026, but this requires purchasing or subscribing to a robot rather than booking a temporary service. Industrial and research robot leasing (including some humanoid platforms) is already available in the Sacramento area for businesses and labs, but that is not a consumer home-cleaning offering.


In the near term, North State residents will continue relying on traditional human cleaners, robot vacuums/mops, and DIY solutions. The longer-term implications are more interesting. California’s robotics ecosystem is heavily concentrated in the Bay Area, where talent, capital, and dense urban environments make early deployments easier. As the technology matures—driven by the real-home data being gathered in San Francisco—the cost and reliability should improve enough for expansion into suburban and more rural markets like the North State.

When that happens, the potential benefits could be significant: lower-cost cleaning access in areas where professional services are already stretched or expensive, reduced physical burden for aging populations, and new economic activity around robot deployment, maintenance, and local operations. Privacy and safety questions (continuous recording, teleoperation, data retention) will travel with the technology and will need clear local answers.


For now, interested North State residents can join the Gatsby waitlist to signal demand, monitor 1X Neo delivery updates, and watch how quickly the hybrid teleoperation-plus-AI model progresses toward fuller autonomy. The race is underway in San Francisco; the North State is still waiting for the robots to head north.
