Compromise Bill May End U.S. Government Shutdown Soon.  The U.S. federal government shutdown, which began on October 1, 2025, and became the longest in history at 40 days by November 9, is on the verge of ending following a bipartisan breakthrough in the Senate. On November 9, eight Democratic and Independent senators broke ranks with their party to vote alongside Republicans, advancing a House-passed short-term funding measure that cleared a key procedural hurdle late Sunday night. The compromise bill, a continuing resolution (CR), would extend government funding at pre-shutdown levels through January 30, 2026, while reinstating fired federal workers, guaranteeing retroactive back pay for all affected employees (including those who worked without pay), and preventing further layoffs until then. In exchange, Democrats secured a commitment from the Trump administration to rehire terminated workers and a promise of a Senate floor vote in December on extending expiring Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits, which had been a major sticking point in negotiations. – CBS News; NPR.org
