Hero Principal Tackles Gunman, Saving Lives at Oklahoma High School

On April 7, 2026, quick thinking and extraordinary courage prevented a potential tragedy at Pauls Valley High School in Oklahoma. Surveillance video captured the dramatic moment when Principal Kirk Moore charged at an armed former student, tackling him to the ground and stopping what authorities say was intended to be a Columbine-style mass shooting.

The incident unfolded around 2:20 p.m. when 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins, a former student, entered the school's lobby carrying two handguns. He pointed a firearm at two students and reportedly yelled for everyone to get on the ground before firing multiple shots.

Without hesitation, Principal Moore rushed from a nearby office or door and tackled Hawkins, wrestling him onto a bench. During the struggle, Moore was shot in the lower right leg, but he managed to disarm the suspect and hold him down until other staff members arrived and police took Hawkins into custody. Only the principal was injured; no students or other staff were harmed.

Investigators later revealed that Hawkins had expressed intent to kill students, faculty, and himself, inspired by the Columbine shooters. Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation credited Moore's actions with saving lives, calling them "heroic" and "amazing."

Moore, who was released from the hospital after treatment, later expressed gratitude for his instincts, training, and the community's support. He stated he looks forward to returning to work soon to continue "educating the next generation of Oklahoma leaders."

Hawkins faces serious charges, including shooting with intent to kill, and remains in custody with bail set at $1 million.

In an era when school safety is a constant concern, Principal Kirk Moore's selfless bravery stands out as a powerful reminder of the dedication many educators show every day. His actions turned a terrifying moment into a story of heroism that has inspired the Pauls Valley community and beyond.

This event highlights both the risks faced by school staff and the profound impact of one person's courage in protecting others.
