Gospel Moment: Trusting God’s Plans When Life Doesn’t Go Our Way

Have you ever made careful plans—only to watch them crumble? Maybe a job fell through, a relationship ended, or health news arrived that left you reeling. In moments like these, the words of Scripture become an anchor for the soul.

The Lord declares in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Notice that God doesn’t say He might have plans—He knows them. They are good plans, filled with hope. But here’s the part that often catches us off guard: God’s plans are rarely identical to ours. Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

When our path twists in ways we never expected, we face a choice: lean on our own limited understanding or lean fully on the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the clear direction we need: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Trusting God doesn’t mean we pretend everything is easy. Jesus was honest with us about life in a broken world. In John 16:33, He said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Trouble is promised—but so is His overcoming power. Peace isn’t found in the absence of problems; it’s found in the presence of the Prince of Peace.

So what do we do when God’s plans look nothing like ours? We pray—unceasingly. The apostle Paul urges us in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer keeps our hearts tethered to the One who holds the future. It turns worry into worship and confusion into surrender.

Friend, whatever season you’re walking through right now—whether it feels like prosperity or pressure—God’s plans for you are still good. He is not surprised by your circumstances, and He has not abandoned His promises. Trust Him with all your heart. Lean on His wisdom, not your own. Pray without ceasing. And rest in the peace that only Jesus can give, even when trouble comes.

This is your Gospel Moment: God’s plans are better than yours, His presence is closer than you feel, and His peace is stronger than any storm.

Will you trust Him today? Let’s pray together right now: Heavenly Father, thank You for the good plans You have for us. Help us release our grip on our own understanding and lean fully on You. Teach us to pray without ceasing, to rejoice even in trouble, and to trust that You have already overcome the world. In the name of Jesus, our Savior, Amen.

You are loved. You are not alone. And the God who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.

Stay rooted in His Word, and keep trusting.
