Arcadia, California Mayor Eileen Wang, 58, resigned on Monday, May 11, 2026, after federal prosecutors announced she had been charged with acting as an illegal agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). Wang has agreed to plead guilty to the felony charge as part of a plea deal. The city of Arcadia is located 13 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and has a population of about 57,000.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed the charge via an information (a formal charging document) in the Central District of California. The single count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

Details of the Allegations

According to the DOJ, from late 2020 through 2022, Wang worked with her then-fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, to operate the website U.S. News Center, which purported to be a news source for the local Chinese-American community. Prosecutors allege the pair acted at the direction of PRC government officials to promote pro-China propaganda in the United States.

Key example cited in court documents:

  • In June 2021, a Chinese government official sent Wang a link to a letter to the editor in the Los Angeles Times written by China’s Consul General in Los Angeles. The letter denied reports of genocide and forced labor against Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Wang posted the link on her site within minutes.

Wang’s attorneys described the actions as “past personal mistakes” influenced by her relationship with Sun, which ended in spring 2024. They emphasized her “love and devotion for the Arcadia community.”

Connections to Other Cases

Sun pleaded guilty to the same charge in October 2025 and was sentenced to four years in prison. He had also served as treasurer for Wang’s 2022 campaign. Wang is additionally linked to communications with John Chen, another individual who pleaded guilty to acting as a Chinese agent.

City Response

Arcadia City Manager Dominic Lazzaretto stated that the investigation concerns Wang’s individual conduct and that no city finances or staff were involved. The alleged activities ceased after Wang was sworn into office in December 2022. The city will appoint an interim mayor.

Wang appeared in federal court on Monday and was released on a $25,000 bond. She is expected to formally enter her guilty plea in the coming weeks.

Broader Context

This case is part of ongoing U.S. efforts to counter Chinese influence operations, particularly in communities with large Chinese-American populations. FBI Director Kash Patel and other officials have highlighted it as an example of foreign interference in local American institutions.
