Jerry Sanchez
Printer’s ink began to course through Jerry’s veins at age 17, when, as a senior at Winslow High School in Arizona, he enrolled in a journalism class and eagerly volunteered as the sports editor for the Bulldog Barks, the school’s monthly publication, printed by the town’s weekly newspaper, the Winslow Mail. As the only male student in the journalism class, Jerry was tasked with overseeing the printing and proofreading of the Bulldog Barks in the male-dominated back shop of the Winslow Mail. It wasn’t long before the paper’s publisher persuaded him to become a sportswriter for the Winslow Mail—unpaid, but rich in experience. Jerry’s story aligns with an old journalism adage: readers are busy, so brevity is key. Shortly after graduating, he left Winslow for California, drawn by the educational and job opportunities offered by its community colleges and daily newspapers. This marked the start of Jerry’s decades-long, fulfilling career with newspapers in California, New York, and Arizona—not as a low-paid sportswriter, but as a well-compensated display advertising sales executive. After all, as the saying goes, “nothing happens until someone sells something!” As a teenage husband and father, having married his first wife, Beatrice, this career path supported his early family. Twenty-five years ago, Jerry and his current wife of 31 years escaped the costly, high-pressure life of Southern California and settled comfortably in downtown Redding, in Northern California. They now enjoy their 18 grandchildren, a gift from their combined five adult children. In true journalistic fashion, Jerry’s story is told with brevity and impact.
