Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party HQ Raided by Anti-Corruption Police Amid Illegal Funding Probe

MADRID – Spain’s ruling Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) headquarters in Madrid was raided by anti-corruption police on May 27, 2026, as part of an escalating investigation into alleged illegal financing, influence peddling, and efforts to discredit judges and critics.

The Civil Guard’s elite Central Operative Unit (UCO) entered the PSOE offices on Calle Ferraz seeking documents related to a suspected network involving fake invoices and irregular payments. Investigators are examining claims that funds were diverted to smear operations targeting ongoing corruption probes against the party, including cases linked to COVID-era contracts and figures close to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Sánchez, who was in Rome meeting Pope Leo at the time of the raid, downplayed the operation as a routine document request and insisted the party is “fully cooperating” with authorities. However, opposition parties are calling it the latest sign of deep rot in his government.

A Leader Who Snubbed America and NATO Now Faces Collapse at Home

This comes as Sánchez — a vocal left-wing figure — has repeatedly clashed with the United States. Earlier in 2026, his government denied the U.S. use of Spanish bases at Rota and Morón for operations during the Iran campaign, condemning the strikes as “unjustified” and outside international law.

Sánchez has also been a drag on NATO, refusing higher defense spending targets pushed by President Trump and the alliance. Spain remains among the lowest contributors, prioritizing social spending over military readiness despite its commitment to gradually reach 2%.

Critics argue this pattern — anti-American posturing abroad paired with domestic scandals — reflects the priorities of Sánchez’s fragile minority government, which relies on alliances with smaller leftist and regional parties.

Mounting Scandals

The raid is the latest blow in a series of controversies surrounding Sánchez and the PSOE:

  • Allegations of influence peddling and bribery.

  • Probes involving Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez.

  • Fake invoice schemes and irregular payments to operatives tasked with undermining judicial proceedings.

Large protests have already taken place against his leadership. With his coalition hanging by a thread, calls for resignation are growing louder from the center-right Popular Party (PP) and Vox.

Whether this proves to be the final nail in the coffin remains to be seen. Sánchez has weathered storms before, but the walls appear to be closing in.
